Family Reunification

Families, extended families, Host families and children

We are committed to the reintegration of children back into family and community life.
We believe that the child’s wellbeing is imbedded in his/her relationship to his/her family.
A full-time Social Worker is employed by Elonwabeni,
and is dedicated to pursuing the reintegration of the child back into the family structures.

Asakhe returns home - after 5 years

Not all attempts at reunification are successful. Although it is every child's dream to return to their family, reunification often teaches them hard lessons - they often learn that the world out there is harsh. Often this hard lesson is paradoxically a part of their healing.

In the case of Asakhe though, we have a good story to tell.
In 2020, in the midst of Covid-19, Elonwabeni traced his grandparents to the Eastern Cape. The paternal family were happy to receive Asakhe back into the family fold.

In January 2021, Asakhe was fetched from Elonwabeni by his paternal grandmother. This was a heartbreaking moment for all of us at Elonwabeni - we were happy that his family was taking him home, but we knew that life at Elonwabeni would never be the same.
Since the, Elonwabeni has provided After-Care services, by visiting Asakhe in the Eastern Cape. The After-care Service is part of our commitment to the children, when they return to their families.
